Algebra Tiles, Money Bingo, Cool Circuits, Spirograph, Add-Sub Combo Tiles, Fraction Zone, Time Tiles, GEO Solids, Tangrams, Krypto Challenge, Pattern Block Puzzles, Multiplication Bingo and 12 more active math games, puzzles, and calculation activities challenged and enthused the students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 for this year’s Learning Fair.
“Learning to persist with math problems is the goal of this event. The 24 stations are geared to appeal to any grade or age level, and students can freely choose what interests them. While our students will enjoy the prizes for ‘five-in-a-row,’ I will prize their persistence toward solutions across a great range of math topics and levels of challenge,” explained Dr. Brockberg, this year’s Learning Fair Coordinator. As students convened in the gym and moved from activity to activity, each earned a matrix stamp for attempting to find a solution, with five-in-a-row netting a prize. And just like the unlimited possibilities of problems to solve in the gym, prizes were unlimited, too!
“I won a book!” exclaimed Thomas. “I liked doing math on the iPad, that was the best,” Caleb explained. For Chris the Spirograph was fascinating, remarking, “I never tried that before.” “Cool Circuits was really, really hard. I do think I would try this again,” reflected Lexi. Yet with all of the challenge, Julia and Ashley felt quite successful with “all those Algebra Tiles.” Perhaps Olivia summed up the over-riding feeling of our students at the Fair, grinning “I like everything about Math!”
